History of regulation

Hungary was the 4th country in the EU that transposed the WEEE1 directive in 2004, the first country in the CEE region that established the producers’ take back system, and the only country in the CEE region that reached the 8kg/inhabitant collection target in 2008.

Until the end of 2011, ELECTRO-COORD Hungary, the compliance scheme established by the APPLiA Hungary member companies and the lighting companies, successfully coordinated more than 75% of the Hungarian e-waste management (other four compliance schemes were responsible for the rest of the e-waste market).

On 1 January, 2012 a new law entered into force, that prohibited the operation of producers’ schemes: since then the state has been taking over the management of e-waste.
